It is impossible to imagine an ophthalmologist’s office without Sivtsev’s table. The table consists of 7 alternating letters, which are arranged in 12 rows, their size gradually decreases from 70 to 3.5 mm.
Application of the Sivtsev table
Sivtsev table is used to test eyesight in people who know the alphabet. An alternative is the Golovin table; where instead of letters open rings with different orientations of discontinuities (Landolt rings) are shown. When evaluating, they are guided by the numbers that are shown on the sides of each row of characters. Parameter D on the left is the distance in meters from which a person should normally see this line (50 m for the first - 2.5 for the last). On the right is the indicator V, the visual acuity of the patient, who when checking from 5 m (reference distance) sees most of the letters in this row and above. In 1-6 rows, 1 error is permissible, in 7-10 rows - up to 2.
For the verification procedure, you must:
- place the patient 5 meters from the table in a bright room;
- additionally illuminate the canvas so that the light falls on it, and does not hit the eyes, the illumination should be 700 lux;
- ask the patient to cover one eye with a special screen, but not to press on it and not to close it;
- the check usually starts from the bottom rows, points to the letter and gives up to 3 seconds to name it. If the patient does not distinguish the letters in this row, go above;
- if the patient does not see even the top line from a standard distance, he is asked to approach half a meter and repeat the test, then another half meter, until he begins to distinguish the letters. The formula V = d / D is used, where d is the actual distance to the table at the time of verification;
- assess visual acuity and go to the second eye.
During examination, the patient should not feel unwell (dizziness, fever), tilt his head, squint.
